Never Talk to unknown people…
Once on the eve of All Saints’ Day, Jack went to the pub to drink a little ale there. There he meets the devil. Between the two struck up a conversation, the aim of which (naturally) was the soul of Jack. In the end, for a mug of ale, it was sold by her unwary owner. Devil turned into a sixpence to give Jack an opportunity to pay for booze. However, the wily Irishman instead of paying the coin to landlord, put it in his pocket, where there was a silver jesus piece. Devil caught in this way become begging pardon of Jack and he let him go on condition that the devil will leave him alone for 10 years. He agreed, and they parted.
After 10 years, the Devil appeared again for the soul of Jack. However, under the guise of the last request, Jack asked him to pick an apple. When the Devil climbed up a tree, a blacksmith painted on the bark of the tree a cross and hung the devil between heaven and earth. Of course, once again they drive a hard bargain, and at the end the devil abandoned Irishman soul forever. Ironically, in the same year, smith died. His soul happened to heaven, but there she was refused to be sheltered. But in hell nobody was waiting for her. Inhospitable Hell advised her to get out of there. But, respecting the request of Jack, Devil gave him a small piece of coal to light his way in the dark. Fearing that the light will be dlown by the wind, Jack put it inside a damn turnips and went to his eternal journey.
Since then, the image of Jack symbolizes the restless soul that is doomed to wander in the darkness until Judgement Day. And his “hellish light” helps to scare off evil spirits, allowing stray don’t go astray. Although originally turnips served as a material for flashlight, later it was replaced by a bright pumpkin.
